In this game, the protagonist — a high school student named Yujiro — has the ability to summon the personas, which are the alternate forms of himself. These forms include the school girl and the thief, as well as the warrior and the assassin. Each persona has its own personality and skills. The player can switch between them to fight the enemies.
The story takes place in Inaba — a fictional city. The main characters explore the serious of murders, bizarrely, to find out, what happened and who is behind those killings.
In addition, the new character — Marie — with an individual storyline arc was added into the expanded version as well as an internet connection allowing one to get help in the battles. Also, minor improvements were introduced into the anime videos and lines in the game.
